Our plan

Approach to learning from leading practices - PROSPER-GP aims to learn from practices which do particularly well in retaining doctors to develop new ways of supporting GPs to thrive and remain in their roles.

1. We will link information about who is working where across England to 12 years of data from a survey of GPs’ satisfaction with their jobs. This will help us to identify reasons why GPs leave or move and how these differ across groups of GPs (e.g. men vs women).

2. We will choose practices with better retention for in-depth research to understand what they are doing that seems to be working.

3. We will invite key groups of people, including patients, GPs and health leaders, to discuss what we have learned. We will work together to come up with ideas for action to improve the retention of GPs.

4. A national survey will test these ideas amongst GPs, asking them which possible actions seem most likely to be helpful.

The research will make sure that we find out about the different experiences that different groups of people might have, including the effect of age, sex and ethnic background.

PROSPER GP is funded through an Advanced Fellowship with the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR306542). The views expressed are those of the authors and not necessarily those of the NIHR or the Department of Health and Social Care
